Tools and Tricks

Over the years, I have come to rely upon some great tools for my kids health and have come up with some tricks of my own. I have compiled the information here.

How to get kids to take their herbs
This can be tricky – particularly for our youngest kids and special needs kids. I have come up with a few ideas that have helped my kids take their herbs, that I will share with you here.

How to cut fingernails
I found that looping a pipe cleaner around the tip of my daughter’s finger, when I trim her nails with clippers, helps her to be calmer and less worried about getting nicked. I also use a social story to help (en Espanol)

How to cut hair
I grew up in a hair salon and thought hair care would be easy for my family, but I was very wrong. We worked with a social story, which helped, but it wasn’t until I realized that the cut hair falling on her was a huge sensory issue and the fear of being hurt with the scissors were the obstacles I needed to overcome if I wanted to help her manage a simple hair cut without a meltdown. I have learned what tools I need and what tricks work best with my girl and haircut time is no longer a big problem. Let me show you what I mean

Law of Midnight and Midday
As the parent of a largely non-verbal autistic child – and as just a plain person – I have found this information to be very valuable. This chart tells you when the different organs are strongest and weakest. Discomfort of difficulty felt or observed at a consistent time can indicate important health needs. When my child was consistently waking at 3am, it implied that it was a lung issue. Giving her the right supplement (in this case ALJ) before she went to bed at night fixed the problem immediately. Learn More…

Herbal First Aid Kit
There are some products that I want to have on hand for life’s day to day health issues:

  • Ginger caps (Upset stomach)
  • Activated Charcoal (sour stomach – food poisoning, etc.)
  • Papaya Mint (Indigestion)
  • White Willow Bark (Natural Aspirin)
  • Silver Gel (Natural anti-infection gel)
  • Colloidal Silver (Immune system builder – great preventative for cold and flu season) I also like Sovereign Silver
  • VS-C Liquid / Caps or Oil of Oregano (Strengthen the immune system against viruses)
  • Distress Remedy (Flower remedy – supports emotional balance)
  • AnxiousLess (Anxiety relief)
  • 30c Boiron Arnica (for injury or trauma)
  • Wild Yam Cream (hormonal support – if you have women in your home, this is a lifesaver!)
I must also say that Wild Yam Cream acts like progesterone – the happy hormone – and it has been suggested that a low dose yam cream can help men and boys with hormonal issues, too, like rage and the transition through puberty. I don’t link a product because I don’t have men in the house, but I think it is valuable information, so I share.

Muscle Testing (Kineseology)
I was first introduced to Muscle Testing years ago. At a Health Expo in Philadelphia a practioner told me that the watch I was wearing was making me “kinetically weak” and he could prove it. He had me hold my arm out in front of me and he could easily push on my arm and lower my hand while I had the watch on. He then told me to take the watch off and tried again. This time it was much more difficult for him to budge my arm and I was very impressed by the demonstration.

Later I learned that you can ask a body what it wants and it will answer you without having to go through the usual communication channels, using muscle testing. You can ask mundane questions (like is my hair red?) or health questions (like is this supplement good for me?) with the arm extended. To get the answer have someone else try to push the arm down – if it goes down, it’s a NO. If the arm stays strong, it’s a YES. This has been so very helpful with a non-verbal child. We’ve used this to determine dietary sensitivities (rather than subject our child to scratch tests) and even how many capsules we should use. Very interesting.

Byonetics Information / Support emails (posted with permission)
I used to get emails from Jean Genet of Byonetic, and I have a couple that I would like to share with you, that I posted here. I just can’t say enough good things about Jean Genet and his Byonetics CDs. As one of the first “vaccine injured” children, decades ago, he has gone on to help many parents and children dealing with autism with a great support group and effective sort of subliminal CDs. I think his information is so important.

Alternative Practitioners
With a non verbal child, I have turned to alternative health practitioners to help me in various ways, in addition to our Integrative Specialist (see if you local children’s hospital has one) and my herbalist parents. I have compiled a list of them here for you.
